The New York State Court of Appeals has upheld the conviction of Bronx rapper Remy Ma, following a 2007 shooting incident that landed her an eight-year jail sentence.
In July 2007, Remy Ma was arrested and charged for shooting her friend Makeda Barnes-Joseph in the abdomen, over a monetary dispute. She was sentenced to eight years in New York’s Rikers Island facility but later appealed the case under claims that jurors were not properly briefed before they turned over the guilty verdict.
According to the Associated Press, the Court of Appeals threw out the argument on Thursday (Feb. 24) and upheld Remy Ma’s eight-year sentence for criminal possession of a weapon and two counts of assault. Last April, Barnes-Joseph filed a $10 million lawsuit against Remy Ma’s label, UMG, based on claims that they maintained their professional relationship with her despite the criminal investigation. The lawsuit was thrown out in court a month later.
