You were supposed to bring us the end of the world, like a week ago or something. Before the internet blew up looking for info on the Mayan calendar, there were so many other things that you held for us. President Obama clinched victory for a second term amidst a nation divided. You gave us such joy with baby Blue Ivy and a Korean pop sensation named Psy. We will all be doing the horse dance (Gangnam Style) through New Year’s night. But then there was the ratchet…
Chris Brown has spent the last year trying to figure out where his life is going. This seemed to consist of making out with Nicole Scherzinger in a club, dating Kerruche Tran, and pining for Rihanna behind his girlfriend’s back, all while partying and tossing bottles at Drake. While in Amsterdam earlier this month, he smoked all the weed he could pack into three blunts at once. I guess he needed to forget how sad and thirsty he looked. All his crying and whining seemed to work, since Chris and RiRi have been spotted multiple places together in the last few months, most recently a Lakers game.
Speaking of tossing bottles, Drake can totally afford to do so after the extremely successful year that he has had. Even though the likes of Pitbull and Rihanna continually sell more singles, Drake moves albums and creates hashtags. With the success of his track, “The Motto,” he turned the phrase YOLO into a common catchphrase among the ratchet and the under 25 set everywhere. Most recently, Drake has challenged retailers Wallgreen’s and Macy’s use of YOLO on merchandise, posting pictures on Instagram with captions that read “Walgreens….you gotta either chill or cut the cheque.” Much like his former character, wheelchair-bound Jimmy Brooks, he doesn’t have much of a leg to stand on when it comes to getting those royalties. Adam Mesh is the first person known to use the acronym in 2003. He subsequently went on to create a clothing line in 2004. Good luck with that one. #YOLO
Rihanna recently scored her first #1 album in the US after 6 eardrum –bursting attempts. To celebrate, Jay-Z gave her a car. I wonder if he considered taking it back because she insists on flashing her lady parts to anyone and everyone that will take a picture. Oh well, I guess she and Chris can take their number one albums and foolery to the bank. Jay-Z has been happily spending the money he’s made off her for years…
…And ever since the Watch the Throne tour, Kanye has been following behind Jay-Z forever grateful for his chance. But dear God, wait til he gets you alone—if he’s not wearing kilts and crystal masks on stage, he’s staring at Kim Kardashian, looking whipped and wondering how he got so lucky. No matter how hard he tries, he can’t seem to make it into that damn Christmas photo. He’s also threatening to boycott the Grammy awards since the Academy clearly snubbed him for a nomination “My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy.” That’s right ‘Ye, stick to The Man. You know where you’re not wanted.
Justin Bieber also had a good run this year. His fourth album, Believe topped the charts at #1, he landed Selena Gomez, had a girl claim to be his baby mama, and a hit out on his life. He still came out clean. He and Selena had a brief break up, but have been sunning it up in Mexico as he prepares to release an acoustic version of his album with songs that he’s dedicated to Selena. Guess he’s really gonna have to earn that spot.
Before we sign off for the year, we at MegaCityVIP would like to take a moment to note that this year also brought with it sorrow and tragedy in the loss of entertainment greats Whitney Houston, and Soul Train host Don Cornelius earlier this year and most recently, with the shootings in Aurora, CO, Sandy Hook, CT and the devastation of Hurricane Sandy. Our condolences are with everyone that has been affected by these tragedies.
Well, there you have it folks—some of the best headlines to grace the web for 2012. Have fun, and enjoy the New Year safely. No drunk driving! Tune in next week for more and be sure to keep checking Mega City VIP for your daily hip hop fix!
