The mother of the Miami Heat basketball star was arrested by Miami Beach police after she reportedly assaulted a valet worker because it was taking too long to have her car delivered.
Police said Gloria James had a strong odor of alcohol on her breath and her eyes were bloodshot when officers arrived at the hotel about 4:47 a.m. Thursday.
The incident reportedly took place at the Fontainebleau resort on Miami Beach.
Police said several witnesses supported valet worker Sorel Rockfeller’s account of the alleged assault.
Gloria James was taken to the Miami Beach Police Department, where she was issued a Promise to Appear on charges of simple battery and disorderly conduct. A police report says she was released to Miami Heat executive Steve Stowe.
As CBSSports.com’s Matt Moore notes, this isn’t the first time the mother of the Miami heat superstar has run into trouble. She was last arrested on a DUI charge in 2006, when police say she resisted arrest and kicked out a cop car window.
James also famously had to tell his mom to sit down and stop yelling during a game in Cleveland against the Celtics.
“You have to move forward,” the NBA’s two-time reigning MVP said. “It is my life and there’s certain things you have to deal with. You try not to let it be a distraction. I have a job to do, still.”
And King James is doing his job: Despite the Heat’s loss to the Bucks Wednesday night, James surpassed 2,000 points for the seventh straight season – becoming the eighth (and youngest) player to do so.
